CoD4 and Activision; Milestones and Landmarks04/22/2008

Activision and Infinity Ward's modern-day first-person shooter hits sales landmark; Variety Map Pack breaks XBLA record with 1M downloads in 9 days.
From the get-go, Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a certifiable hit. Its PC performance notwithstanding, the Infinity Ward-developed modern-warfare shooter debuted with more than 2 million units sold across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in its first month last November. Though having been available for only two months, the title also managed to take the 2007 sales crown, with Activision saying in January that COD4 had sold 7 million units worldwide by year's end.
Proving to have legs beyond 2007, COD4 landed the top slot in the NPD Group's monthly sales dump for January and February, though it was ousted in March by Super Smash Bros. Brawl's staggering 2.7 million-unit debut. Even so, March's NPD report did signify a significant milestone for Activision and Infinity Ward. According to a post by Infinity Ward director of communications Robert Bowling on the game's official blog, COD4 has officially sold more than 9 million units worldwide since launch.
With the Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition out two weeks ago, Bowling also noted that the Variety Map Pack has set an Xbox Live Marketplace record of logging more than 1 million downloads in its first nine days. The four-map pack came as a free download with COD4: GOTYE, and those who already owned the Xbox 360 version of the game could purchase the add-on over Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft points ($10). The Variety Map Pack will be available on the PlayStation Network next week.
For a more in-depth look at Infinity Ward's record-setting Variety Map Pack, check out GameSpot's recent hands-on with the download.
Antitrust body deems $18.9 billion merger of publishing powerhouses
would not create unfair competition.
Today, Activision and Vivendi Games cleared yet one more hurdle lying in the path of their $18.9 billion merger. The European Commission, which is part of the European Union, has approved the deal under its antitrust guidelines, concluding that an Activision Vivendi mash-up "would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area or any substantial part of it."
According to the EC's report, the merger's reach was measured on both a horizontal and vertical scale. In terms of horizontal competition, the EC deemed the Vivendi-Activision union would "continue to face several strong, effective competitors, such as Electronic Arts, and the game console manufacturers, such as Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft."
Addressing vertical synergies, the EC noted that Vivendi's ownership of Universal Music Group would give Activision an advantage in licensing music but concluded that other publishers would continue to have access to a "sufficiently large portfolio of music rights from alternative suppliers." The EC also noted that the merger would not impact wholesale distribution competition of PC games in the UK.
In February, soon-to-be Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said that the merger was progressing as anticipated and was expected to conclude by June. To secure its 52 percent controlling stake in the newly formed conglomerate, Vivendi has undertaken several financing initiatives, including securing loans to the tune of €4 billion (about $6.3 billion) by January as well as banking an additional $1.4 billion earlier this month from the issuance of corporate bonds to various banking institutions.

The CPL Ceases Operations03/14/2008

THE CYBERATHLETE PROFESSIONAL
LEAGUE CALLS IT QUITS
Effective immediately, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) will cease operations. Therefore, all CPL events currently scheduled for 2008 are hereby canceled.
The CPL was launched in June 1997 with the pioneering mission of promoting and sanctioning video game competitions as a professional sport. For ten years the CPL events experienced increased growth - commencing with a small LAN event in
Dallas, Texas, and culminating in world-class competitions across five continents.
However, the current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate have prompted the CPL to suspend its pro-tournament operations. The CPL regrets that this news will disappoint those that were planning on attending the summer and winter events this year.
Many thanks to all of the sponsors and partners that helped CPL establish the groundwork for professional video game competitions. Their vision and pioneering spirit should always be remembered.
